Typically, travel insurance is sold as a package of various coverages. These coverages differ depending on the plan. However, most travel insurance plans include coverages for:

  • Trip Cancellation
  • Baggage and Personal Effects
  • Emergency Medical
  • Travel Accident
  • Medical Evacuation

Some plans place limitations on their provided coverages. For instance, the coverage may only apply to certain situations or there may be a limit to the amount of reimbursement given. Therefore, it is best to check if your plan has any limitations.

Trip Cancellation

Have to suddenly cancel your trip? This coverage will reimburse you for any prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses you may have. Insurance plans can vary on acceptable reasons for a trip cancellation and the amount of reimbursement you will be given. Valid reasons for cancelling your trip usually include natural disasters, sudden death or injury, and pressing work circumstances.

Trip Interruption

What if your trip gets interrupted after you have departed? This coverage can help reimburse you for your unused, non-refundable, prepaid travel expenses. If the interruption causes you to stay at a destination longer than expected, this coverage can also cover additional expenses for travel and lodging.

Trip Delay

In the event that your trip gets delayed for an extended period of time, this coverage can help reimburse you for any additional expenses you obtain because of the delay.

Emergency Medical

This coverage covers any emergency medical expenses that you may obtain while traveling abroad. Medical coverage can vary based on the length of coverage and the types of medical expenses covered. For example, some emergency medical coverages include emergency medical evacuations while others sell the two policies separately.

Emergency Medical Evacuation

This coverage provides transport assistance to the nearest hospital in the event of a medical emergency. If your condition worsens, some plans will cover transport back to a hospital in your home country.

Missed Connection

In the event that you unexpectedly miss your flight, this coverage can reimburse you for unused flight tickets and additional transportation expenses.

Baggage and Personal Effects

This coverage will compensate you for any lost, stolen, or damaged luggage and personal belongings.

Travel Accident (AD&D)

Also known as Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D), this coverage provides benefits to beneficiaries in case of accidental injuries, dismemberment, and deaths that may occur while traveling. In other words, this coverage acts as a sort of life insurance for when you travel.

Travel Assistance

This coverage provides you support services in case of an emergency while you are traveling. Services can include medical and legal assistance. For instance, if you need help getting a prescription or you lost your passport, travel assistance can help you. Similarly, 24/7 Travel Assistance provides support services while you are traveling, but at all hours of the day.
